Spring/Summer Updates

Sunday, 01 August 2010 15:26 Written by Matthew Cimone

Dear Friends,

We have been in the process of upgrading our website. As a result, we have neglected posting updates on the site and have been focusing primarily on the Facebook page. If you haven't been keeping up to date on Facebook, and have been wondering what the organization has been up to, we invite you to "fan" our Facebook page simply by searching for Esther's Echo in Facebook.

For those of you following on the website, allow us to take this opportunity to update you.

Esther's Echo has shot two promotional videos that will go live with our new website come this Fall. Our intention is to create a far more dynamic and multimedia centered site providing a better sense of our vision and our efforts to make that vision a reality.

Both these videos are now in post-production with one being edited by our friend and partner Paul Muzzin through Riptide Media.

In May, Net Change, a conference exploring uses of information technology to foster social change, was hosted in Toronto. Both of us attended several sessions we felt pertinent to Esther's Echo as the organization is essentially founded upon technology to constitute our peer-to-peer network. In anticipation of our new site, Net Change was the unveiling of our new gadget, a Bloggie. The Bloggie is a camera designed specifically for creating online content and vlogs. The video blogs from Net Change we captured will appear on the new site and helps to visualize some of the content we explored while at the conference. Expect to see more of this content on the new site.

Late May found Esther's Echo up in Thunder Bay, Ontario for the North Western Ontario Secondary School Student Association's annual leadership conference. This year's conference, EPIC, hosted Esther's Echo as a key note speaker. Matthew made the journey from Toronto to address the conference's delegates and conference organizers. Matthew's presentation focused on enduring leadership that is persistent despite resistance, shortfall in resources, and many other hurdles that face all community leaders when striving for positive social change. He shared stories of the brave community leaders he met abroad while working both in Uganda and Sierra Leone who served as examples of dedication and perseverance against all odds; the same brand of leaders that we are striving to support through Esther's Echo. Over 150 delegates signed up for the Esther's Echo contact list and we have already received requests from a number of students to visit their schools. We hope this will lead to future speaking opportunities this Fall/Winter.

Our push toward the Fall is to choreograph the registration of Esther's Echo as a legal entity in Canada with the re-launch of our website. Stay posted as we plan to bring up the new site toward September along with the new digital content we have created.

Thank you to all of you again for your continued support and for remaining in the loop with regard to our progress. Several times we have crossed paths with some of you randomly in Toronto and are so excited that you know all about our progress. Please continue to visit the Facebook page as well as the website for further updates and the re-launch of the site!

Sincerely,

The Esther's Echo Team

Esther's Echo Founder at 2010 Olympic Games

Tuesday, 16 February 2010 21:19 Last Updated on Tuesday, 16 February 2010 21:33 Written by Matthew Cimone

Hello to Everybody from Vancouver!!

Matthew here. I arrived in Vancouver recently to volunteer during the 2010 games. The city is buzzing with excitement, enthusiasm and a general sense of camaraderie. Every time I whip out a map I have half a dozen locals try to help me with directions. There are thousands of volunteers graciously giving their time in a myriad of capacities to grease the wheels of the Olympic machine and the audience literally exploded last night at the medal ceremony for Bilodeau which I was fortunate enough to attend.  I have arrived on site with Right to Play, an international humanitarian organization that fosters community development through sports programming directed toward children. My first in-field development experiences were through Right to Play. It was during my time with the organization in Sierra Leone that I met Esther who was actually one of our Right to Play Sport Coaches. You can check out more about Right to Play at www.righttoplay.com

My role with the organization in Vancouver is to assist with Right to Play TV (RTPtv). Right to Play TV is an online webcast being filmed at the CBC Studios in Vancouver. We are bringing Olympic Athlete Ambassadors  who support Right to Play - such as Clara Hughes and Silken Laumman - into the studio to talk about their experiences with the organization. These interviews are being hosted on the Right to Play Website. I am not conducting interviews, but I will be taking a pulse of the city by filming the "Word on the Street" segments. Word on the Street takes a cross section of Vancouver during the games by interviewing visitors, the randomly encountered celebrity, and locals within the context of the Olympic fever.

Keep an eye on the Right to Play website. You may see me in a few of the scenes. In the meantime, you can check out the Esther's Echo fan page on Facebook where I will be sure to upload some of my more memorable photos from the games!

Help Esther's Echo Win a Grant Through Your Online Participation!!

Sunday, 17 January 2010 13:33 Written by Matthew Cimone

Hello Fans of Esther's Echo

We have recently submitted a grant application to a foundation called Ashoka. Their community action network is called Changemakers that describes itself as a "community of action where we all collaborate on solutions. We know we have the power to solve the world’s most pressing social problems. We’re already doing it, one project, one idea at a time."

A competition was recently posted on Ashoka that we have applied for called the "We Media PitchIt! Challenge: How can we use media to inspire a better world?" Since Esther's Echo is founded upon using digital media to spread awareness of amazing community projects, we have put in an application that can now be found on their website.

Part of the deciding factor in who wins this project will be the feedback of the online community. We are asking you to please go online and post a comment in support of Esther's Echo. You will need to sign up for the Ashoka community to make a post which is an amazing online community to be a part of and which only takes a few minutes to do.

The winning organization receives 25,000 dollars and a trip to Miami for 3 days to network. This opportunity would be a tremendous help to Esther's Echo. Posts can only be made for the NEXT TWO DAYS.

So please get online and comment! You can find the website here:

http://www.changemakers.com/en-us/node/66538/entries

As of now (8:21 AM) the post hasn't gone through yet, so keep checking back. They are posted in order of the most recent entries. Just look for Esther's Echo. Remember, to make a comment, you will need to sign up for Ashoka first and then return to the entries page. Click on our project and then the comments tab. On the right you will see an icon to post a comment. This icon will not appear until you are registered on the community.

Thank you so much everybody. I estimate we will need at least 30 comments to stand out in the community. I know we can do that with all the supporters we have on our Facebook fanpage!!

Esther's Echo Makes Semi-Final Round of the "Echoing Green" Seed-Funding Fellowship

Thursday, 14 January 2010 17:19 Written by Matthew Cimone

Exciting news!

Esther's Echo has been selected as a semi-finalist for the Echoing Green Seed-Funding fellowship. Over 1200 applicants from across North America apply each year to Echoing Green, a foundation that supports organizations in their early start-up phases. The fellowship, worth 90,000USD, provides start-up capital required for the initial hurdles of starting a non-profit organization. Only 300 applicants carried through to the semi-finals.

After an arduous first round application, we will now be working hard on completing the second round application which is even far more detailed and involved than the first. The second phase application includes 15 essay questions, a chart which outlines our uniqueness in the development industry, a matrix indicating our effectiveness in addressing "root cause" rather than "symptomatic" issues, and finally a two-year budget proposal.

Final deadline for the second phase is February 8th with results back in March. We will keep you posted on our progress! If anybody wants to help by being another pair of eyes to edit, please let us know!

More on Echoing Green can be found at www.echoinggreen.org
